- 1891-1974. British physicist. In 1932 he
- discovered the particle in the nucleus of an
- atom that became known as the neutron because
- it has no electric charge. He was awarded a
- Nobel prize 1935. Chadwick studied at
- Cambridge under Ernest Rutherford. He was
- Lyon Jones professor of physics at Liverpool
- 1935-48, and master of Gonville and Caius
- College, Cambridge 1948-59. In 1940 he was
- one of the British scientists reporting on
- the atom bomb.
